Hiking
in the Pyrenees, Trekking in the Pyrenees, LEVELS
OF DIFFICULTY:
Use the scale bellow
before contacting our Pyrenees guide service. It helps you to determine your level of fitness. each hike can be designed in a way that each hike can
help you improve
your shape. Mountain hikes are a like a natural keep-fit course : in 2
weeks you can turn excess fat into lean muscle!
You can
improve strength and stamina, and also suppleness, because the hikes go
through mountain terrain. And needless to say, your natural beauty
returns.
Our
grading is as follows :
|
 |
-
Walker
= novice who would like to hike in the mountains but has little
training. He/she cannot yet read a map and would lose his/her way,
-
Learner
: practices some kind of sporting activity at least twice a week but has little experience of
ascents and descents, walking on other than paths, crossing snowfields or
screens, or orientation in the mountains,
-
Hiker
: has knowledge of the mountains, of walking on other than paths, crossing snowfields or
screens, can navigate and knows his/her limits,
-
Mountaineer
: experienced all-season mountain hiker able to dig out steps with an ice-axe
and to stop him-/herself on a snow slope.
For
your pleasure in safety : ask our guide service for a hike that suits your ability! Made
to measure hiking holidays are 20 to 50% off for members

SUGGESTIONS
from our Pyrenees guide service
for Hiking & Trekking in the Pyrenees
See this years hiking
suggestions program. Each
of those hikes in the Spanish or French Pyrenees or elsewhere can be adapted to your level of fitness and what you're looking for.
NB: our guide does not like "tourist as
if hiking" or fake adventure trekking
as proposed by guides and companies who don't live in the Pyrenees and only know
them from trail descriptions in books and a short exploration before starting or
even some years ago.
That kind of "trekking" sticks to well know trails and huts. You would not
even need a guide for since most of them are now marked or in plain on the maps.
However they don't mind to ask you a lot of money for that.
|
|
Richard prefers
taking you along unpublished trails, through passes used for smuggling long
before the European Union existed or during world war II for helping people
escape to Spain. You won't find these routes in books and many of them even
disappeared from the more recent ordnance survey maps. Only shepherds,
hunters and people living here still know where they were and find them. Ask
Richard to adapt that kind of unforgettable adventure holidays
to your level of fitness, that of your group or kids. |
Possible areas for trekking or made to measure hiking in the Pyrenees
in dialogue with our guide service include the more famous Pyrenean massifs Canigou, Carlit, Pic d'Estats, Romedo,
Alt Sobira, Certascans, Mont Valier, Val d'Aran, Aigues Tortes, Sant Maurici,
Maladeta, Possets, Aneto, Neouvieille, Monte Perdido, Ordessa, Vignemale,
Balaïtous, Pic d'Ainie, Parc National des Pyrénées etc.
Other
made to measure programs such as combined stay in the house + guided hiking
in the Pyrenees, in winter snow shoe hiking etc are possible, just ask
Richard our Mountain Leader.

Here's another suggestion from
our Pyrenees Mountain Leader:
LUCHON
TO MIGLOS VIA VAL
D’ARAN, MONTGARI AND
THE VENTELAO LAKES
This tour,
mainly in Spain, takes you even
further away from civilization by way of one of Richard's alternatives to the
marked long distance path on the border between France and Catalonia. We
pass by twenty or so deep blue tarns and 4 splendid mountain ranges with ever
more beautiful views. The scenery is a harmonious mix of forest, meadows,
mountains and lakes that you find only in the Pyrenees. The climate is
delightfully Mediterranean and dry. We follow in part poorly marked paths,
with here and there a cairn, and go even further from the
civilized world.
Here eagles and vultures rule the skies and wolves can be seen from time to
time, and perhaps also one of the few remaining bears.
Montgari is an old mountain hermitage and typical shepherds
place of pilgrimage. The Ventelao lakes are a area
of outstanding natural beauty with far reaching
views over the central Pyrenees.
|
We climb the peaks of Puig d’Estats ( 3.143m)
and
Montcalm (3.077m) and trek back into France along an old almost forgotten
smugglers' path.
-
Rendezvous at Luchon
railway station (with comfortable sleeper train from Paris).
However overnight in Miglos with group travel to
Luchon will be organised for those staying at
the gîte.
-
We pass Fos, Montgari,
Ventelao, Tavascon, Certescans, Romedo, Broate, Puig d’Estats, l’Artigue and finish at
Miglos.
-
Overnights in
lightweight tents at scenic spots or in conformable unmanned Catalonian
mountain huts.

COMBINED
MOUNTAIN HIKING AND MEDITATION
This
is for those who wish to become real hikers and mountaineers. Because the
places we visit are unspoilt jewels of nature. Participation is limited to 9
persons per tour.
We
search out the most beautiful and secluded corners of the mountains, and then
spread out from each point so that participants can camp about 1km apart.
You spend about two-thirds of the time alone, then we hike together to the
following scenic spot.
|
Hiking mountain retreat
to the most isolated spots in the mountains is a natural way to go into and find
the deepest parts of oneself.
This is known since the
beginning of mankind by those who live close to nature. You should be
prepared for this and for what might confront you, as when you are alone like
this things come up that you might normally avoid or don't find time for in
life's daily grind. During mere
contemplation a natural cleansing or catharsis is
set in motion which allows processing of as yet unprocessed experiences and
finding solutions to yet unsolved problems.
|
Meditation process counselling is free for those who want, but no psychological or spiritual accompaniment is
necessary for those who
normally able to stand on their own feet (and this excursion is for
those). Own self-critical judgment and openness and the ability to
follow through to the end in any circumstances suffice. Being alone
in the wilderness does the rest.
It is an exciting and special experience in which one thing and another
are called into question and where you get the chance to get to know the
"soul" of the mountains and why you feel attracted to them.
This
kind of excursion is expressly not for those who stand on their own feet only in
their thoughts and become afraid as soon as they are left
to themselves
for whole days' and nights' camping in the wilderness (in total for
two-thirds of the time).
|
 |
Whoever
wishes to go through the complete meditation cycle (which actually lasts 28
days) can stay in the mountains for a further 2 weeks : extra supplies
can be organized for this additional time.
